In the 1760s and 1770s, a Scottish luminary named William Preston penned the Entered Apprentice degree as it has been handed down to us. While it has gone through numerous changes between then and now, when Preston composed the lecture, he penned the Fourth Clause with one thing in particular in mind: the Kabbalah Otz Chayyim or Tree of Life. In this talk, we will examine the Entered Apprentice lecture in a new light and discover the complex metaphysical system that Preston intentionally encoded within the degree, for the benefit and edification of future generations of Masons.
