What is Freemasonry?

A System of Self Improvement

Freemasonry is a system of self improvement for men. It is an individual journey, done within a fraternal context. Only you can improve yourself. Freemasonry provides tools and direction while surrounding you with a network of men all striving to do the same. It uses symbolism, ritual, and allegory to teach ancient truths and moral principles.

A Fraternity

Freemasonry is for men only. Does that mean we are sexist or anti-woman? Of course not. Male only spaces are necessary to create an environment for men to improve and grow. There are many studies proving this in the realm of education. These environments are rare in our society today, making them even more important. Male only spaces, female only spaces, and spaces where we all come together are all vital to a thriving culture. The system of Freemasonry however is specifically designed for men, to make them wiser, better, and therefore happier. Throughout all of history men have used fraternal networks to strengthen one another.

It is primarily men who make up our prison populations, abandon their children, drop out of school, and succumb to addiction and suicide. Most of the ills women face in society are caused by subpar men. In achieving our mission of bettering ourselves, we create a better world for all, especially women.

A Members Only ORganiztion

Freemasonry is exclusive by its nature. Membership is reserved for worthy men alone. As a members only organization, our meetings are closed. This is not unlike corporate or non-profit board meetings, trade associations, private clubs, or any other membership based organization. Membership contains privileges that only members are entitled to. Would you join a country club that let non-members golf for free?

In free countries, Freemasons are open about their membership. Members wear masonic rings and have masonic license plates. Lodge buildings have signs that publicly display their meeting times and many have websites and social media accounts. We host public ceremonies and events. Not much of a “secret society” huh? Only in despotic countries such as communist or Islamic dictatorships do Freemasons have to hide their membership out of fear for their lives.

While it is exclusive, Freemasonry is concerned with merit only. It does not exclude based off of religion or race or where you are from. It only concerns itself with your character.

Is it a religion?

No, however Freemasonry does require a belief in a Supreme Being. Atheists are not allowed to join. Nor would Satanism be compatible with its teachings. It is open to all religions, although its membership usually reflects the society in which it operates. In the Western world the majority of Masons are Christians, however we have members from many different faiths. Being a “Free” Mason, you are tought to think for yourself. Masonry teaches you that in order to be a complete man, you must nurture your own spirituality, it simply leaves the manner in which you do that up to you. In keeping with our use of the symbolism of stonemasonry, you often will hear Freemasons refer to Deity as “The Great Architect of the Universe.” This is not some “different” God that we all worship. It is simply a way to refer to God in a manner that does not favor one faith over another, in order to maintain harmony among brothers of different beliefs.
